How to Report Cybercrime in India: NCRP, 1930 Helpline & Bengaluru Cyber Cell

If something has happened to you online — fraud, harassment, a leaked photo, a hacked account — knowing where to actually report it is often the first hurdle. India has several official channels for this, and it helps to understand what each one is actually for.

1. The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP)

This is India's central online system for reporting cybercrime, and for most situations, it's the best place to start: cybercrime.gov.in.

There are two separate paths on the portal:

  • "Report Crime Related to Women/Child" — this path allows you to file anonymously if you prefer, and covers harassment, leaked content, blackmail, and similar cases.
  • "Report Other Cyber Crimes" — for financial fraud, hacking, and other general cybercrime.

You'll register with your mobile number and an OTP, describe the incident, add any evidence or suspect details you have, and submit. You'll get a reference number back — save it, it's how you track your complaint's progress afterward.

2. The 1930 Helpline

This is India's national cybercrime helpline, and it's especially important if money is involved. If you've lost money to online fraud, calling 1930 as soon as possible — ideally within 24 hours — significantly improves the odds of the transaction being frozen before the funds move further. It's a phone-based channel, so it works well when speed matters more than detailed documentation.

3. Bengaluru's Cyber Crime Police

Bengaluru has a dedicated Cyber Crime Police Station, based at the Police Commissioner's office, along with a network of CEN (Cybercrime, Economic & Narcotics) police stations spread across the city's police zones, set up specifically to register and investigate these cases locally.

One honest note here: recent reporting has found that several CEN police station hotline numbers across the city haven't been reliably reachable by phone. If you try a local number and it doesn't connect, don't assume the system isn't working for you specifically — it's a known, reported issue. Your best options in that case are:

  • File through the NCRP portal instead, which doesn't depend on a phone line at all
  • Visit your local CEN police station or the Cyber Crime Police Station in person
  • Check the official Bengaluru City Police website for the most current contact details for your specific zone, since local station numbers can change

Which One Should You Actually Use?

In practice, most people end up using more than one:

  • Money lost right now? Call 1930 first, then follow up on the NCRP portal.
  • Harassment, blackmail, or leaked content? Start with the NCRP portal's Women/Child path — you can file anonymously if that matters to you.
  • Want a formal police case (FIR)? You'll need to visit a police station or your local CEN station in person, ideally with everything already documented from the NCRP filing.

These aren't competing options — filing on the portal and visiting in person, or calling 1930 and filing online, is completely normal and often the right move.

Before You File, Have This Ready

Whichever channel you use, having your evidence organized in advance — screenshots, URLs, transaction details, a clear timeline of what happened — makes the process faster and your complaint stronger. If you're not sure exactly what to gather, we've written a full breakdown of that separately.

How CCRA Can Help With This

Figuring out which reporting channel applies to your situation, and getting your complaint taken seriously, can feel overwhelming on top of everything else. You don't have to work it out alone.

  • Help you understand which channel(s) actually apply to your situation
  • Help you prepare your documentation properly before you file
  • Support you through the reporting process itself, confidentially
